INTER-HOUSE GAMES – TRIBUNE!

It will follow the fan fiction style whereby in the first issue of tribune for the year, a short story is put up. Entries about the sequel of the stories are expected and for each round, we will choose the best one based on our own judging system. This best entry of the sequel will be published on the next publication. This will go on for 3-4 rounds.

RULES

No fanfiction related to / based on published works (e.g. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, any form of anime or manga). Your work has to be original.
No vulgarity or any form of sexual content to be included. No same-sex pairings or graphic scenes are allowed.
The work MUST end with a cliffhanger.
Work has to be no longer than 1 page on a standard A4-size Microsoft Word document, at least 250 words long, font size 11, NOT 12.
Works are to be submitted by 17 March, 3pm.
One soft copy must be sent to tribune.rgs@gmail.com and one hard copy to be placed in the General Office.
The story you have to write will have to be a continuation of the story that is released in the Unspoken issue and it must end in a cliffhanger as well.

The details of the IHG tribune are stated in the new issue released and on the Tribune board outside the canteen. Or you could also visit the IHG tribune website, bookof-tales.blogspot.com.

105 went to the beach on one lovely Sunday morning. Suddenly, Jingwen saw something strange, and she started singing "LOVE-ME!" She stopped when someone shouted, "Jingwen peed on her pants!" Charm is a lovesick loony. Whenever she sees a boy, she pukes blood on them!I'm bleeding! OMG! AH! HELP!And the boys run away and jump into the sea. Charm was so shocked that the boys did not understand. She jumped in the sea to explain that she loved them very much. Then, along came Karen who started flooding the sea with her spongebob squarepants yellowey underpants. Someone shouted, "You support Waddle?" Karen immediately turned and saw Farah in huge green underpants. Suddenly, they started singing "It's-Elmo's-World!" Karen stopped singing soon after and ate a dinosaur fossil which belonged to Farah Natalya. WeiZhen immediately tried to save the dinosaur from Karen's Farah. Najwa ate a slimy frog which turned her into one. She hopped off a cliff and landed on the fossil, turning into a prune cake and some chocolate chip cookies! She exclaimed, "Oh no I'm going to get so fat, but it's okay 'cause I jump around so much everyday." "Do you?" everyone asked curiously. Najwa did not reply. Instead she gave out angbao, and wished us Happy New Year.

Promoting NYAA camp'08!!!

NYAA stands for National Youth Achievement Award. Its a award given to S'porean youths, for outstanding achievements and being special :D Its quite prestigeous and i'll bet it looks good on future resumes!

There are three levels to the award, bronze, silver and gold. At this age, we can only qualify for bronze though, and then work your way up. There are 4 sections you have to complete to get the award. Service, Skills, Physical recreation and Adventurous Journey. NYAA camp, facillitated by RGODAC, fulfills the Adventurous Journey part of the awards requirements. So you need not worry about that portion of the requirements any longer! At the NYAA camp, specially organised every year for Sec 2s, you get to do many fun and challenging acivities, such as rock climbing, abseiling, prussicking and many others. There is a small fee involved, including the provided food, but its well worth the enriching experience the camp will give you!

SO SIGN UP FOR NYAA CAMP'08!!! the exact dates aren't confirmed yet, but if you are interested, give your names to me, and i'll check with my seniors. Additionally, if you have any queries, you can talk to me or go to the NYAA website: http://www.nyaa.org/ ! There are only 40 spaces available, so you must sign up early!! must join okay, promise!!!

i'm just helping out jody and shanxi with regards to the planning of our class outing
oh and we must really thank them for doing such a great job!! :D

erm, as jody says, it's too late to book the chalet now :(
So, we have another alternative...

Shanxi has kindly volunteered to have a bbq party at her house!!
(and Karen's mum would be providing the bbq food, is it?)
Perhaps before the bbq, we can have fun at east coast park (shanxi lives in the east FYI)

I'm sorry this isn't about class chalet >.<

There is an NIE student requesting to do an experiment in our school. He needs a 2-hour session with 15 students in a computer Lab. He is hoping to get volunteers for the experiments to be conducted on Friday 16th November at 2pm.

Do u think you can help? Just come for 2 hours and I think it will be quite interesting and something different. Let me know? You can forward this to your friends as well then maybe you can come as a group and have fun together :D

This is briefly what the experiment is about:

The focus of this classroom experiment is to observe the effectiveness of a reflective prompts production mechanism embedded in our TA environment. We hypothesize that the reflective prompts will enhance the interactivity of the agent environment and motivate the students into effective role-playing as a teacher.

During this 2-hr session, we need 15 secondary school students in a computer classroom to participate the experiment, and they can be divided into three groups. Group 1 teaches the basic version of agent without prompts. Group 2 teaches the agent with step-by-step prompts leading to higher thinking. Group 3 teaches the agent with post-task prompts incorporated.

Hello once again everybody!

After cancelling out the dates where people are not in Singapore, we are left with:

so personally I feel it's more sensible to take December 2,3&4. It's sunday,monday and tuesday.

I WAS THINKING. We could have 2 nights. The first night being the BBQ and then we have a funfunfun sleepover, then we have a funfunfun time on the second day playing around downtowneast. (ohyes, sentosa is fully booked. i checked :( ) then the second night is for people who WANT to stay over. :D

alright. some people haven't replied to my request for information but i'm just going to make do with what i have because i can't possibly wait for everyone. x(

p.s : sorry people who wanted sentosa. and sorry people who wanted to stay away from downtowneast. unless you don't mind pasir ris (though i don't see the sense because it's so nearby and it's more expensive). I reckon I'll be going down with shanxi sometime this week to book the chalets. more details shall be given soon.

Hello everyone!

Shanxi, Natalie and Jody have a lot of free time on our hands (because obviously we're not the working type) and decided to help organize the class chalet!

We've decided to book a chalet at either Downtown East, Pasir Ris, or Sentosa. Costa Sands Resorts are the cheapest we could find. For one night, right? Or if you guys want more nights... then give us more money :)

the more important things that we need to know are what dates you guys are free. Could we just book a date and you guys clear that date? It would definitely be moremoremoremore convenient that way (sorry!) and would you people mind paying an entrance fee of maybe $5, so that we have enough money for the BBQ food youknow. Because we kind of only have $250 in our class fund.

Anyway, there are some announcements that I have to make :(

1. This is directed to Zhang Jingwen
Please confirm that you will be attending the ;ibrary Sec4 farewell on 2 Nov. It will begin at 12pm sharp and all Sec 1s to 3s are to pay $3 for that food that will be provided. If you are going, please come to the 210 classromm (E314) to submit the money to Tricia by Thursday 2.30pm. (If you want to leave the money in her class tray, please enclose it in an envelope so that it will be safely kept) Thank you for your cooperation.
There is a similar note for Wang AiLi as well, Jingwen, please inform them that AiLi has migrated to Canada.

2. To the whole class:
Please remember to bring your conscent forms on Drama Night whether your parents will be attending the event. And also, please bring $12 for the class shirt for those who have yet to pay. Pass to Jia Le.

For the $26 that I found. Please claim it if it is yours. Jia Le, please check if it is from the money collected from the class shirts. It was found around the lockers.

Yes, our class has been really messy since the end of the examinations. Averill and I stayed back to clean up the class already. All the items found lying around has been grouped and place on different tables. Please collect your items or all items left behind will be thrown away. Please do not just claim them and leave them at the lockers. Thank You

Plot: Rose and Jack are the two new employees at Uncle Lee's Magic Throne Cinema, a small, rather dinky establishment run by their neurotic manager Christopher. They join a sligtly off-kilter crew comprising of the excitable snack bar guy Amigo and the nameless Cleaner, who might or might not have dark secret. Together with its array of patrons, Stubs is sure to get you laughing.
They will be performing on the 23rd Nov, Fri (7.30pm) and 24th Nov, Sat (2.30pm, 7.30pm) at the KS Chee Theatre.
Tickets are priced at $10. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to charity. For information, please visit the official website of the production here.
The form is due on Monday 29th Oct and to be placed in Miss Audrey Chen's locker nest to the Anderson's staffroom. You do not have to bring the money yet, payment will be made on collection of the tickets. A Nil return is required.

THIS IS EXTREMLY IMPORTANT OK.TMR.
Stand Up Against Poverty is about renewing our promises and reminding our leaders of the United Nations' Millenium Development Goals, which are supposed to be met in 2015 (but we are currently very far from it!). To summarize the movement: people around the world will STAND UP, and take a pledge against poverty, inequality, and make a sincere appeal for proper healthcare, sanitation and fair trade. Being active does not mean that you need to donate a lot of money, or make a major contribution. Through these small acts, you can make a huge difference towards improving living conditions in less developed countries.

RGS will be 1. taking a pledge against poverty, 2. putting their handprints on various end poverty banners around the school, 3. watching videos/documentaries on poverty issues. For more information, visit INET.

Students (and teachers) are welcome to wear school-approved white tees, as well as white wristbands/ strings around their wrists. RGS STANDS UP! will be covered by the media :)

For the CLASS T-SHIRT, i regret for informing all f u what is the response from the auntie. So let me tell u NOW.

Fisrtly, i had already infromed the auntie on friday. she is well-infromed about what we wnat- the design, quantity, colour, quality. So REST ASSURED. In fact she was already infromed about 2 months ago, then i declined her help because of the annoucement made by our school.SO.....

A man was walking across the road when he met with an accident.

The impact was on his head which caused him to be in a coma for 2 days.

Note that these are suggested answers, and any other relevant and substantiated claims are accepted as well. Evaluation of the scripts will be based on the 'O' Level set text rubric.

(a) What conflicts within the Keller household are illustrated in this passage? Support your answer with evidence from the extract.

Students are required to identify and state the possible conflicts presented in the extract. For every relational or situational conflict listed, pupils must cite the part of the extract that leads them to conclude so. Weak students might give simply stated and superficial types of conflicts followed by direct quotations. Average answers might include some paraphrasing and elaboration to explain their claims of basic conflicts discussed in class. On top of these, strong students might be able to gather deeper insights into the conflicts from the evidence used, and explain with greater personal response, close reading and awareness of the issues/perspectives involved.

Relational Conflict – Helen fears/ hates to be around Annie. Situational Conflict – Annie is facing problems trying to teach Helen.	"…the slightest hope of your teaching a child who flees from you now like the plague…" "I can't teach a child who runs away." "It's useless for me to try to teach her language or anything else her."	The situation between Annie and Helen is problematic particularly because one cant stand to be in the same room as the other, particularly because Helen is unable to understand what Annie is trying to do. i.e. help her. Annie has trouble doing her job because of Helen's behaviour and resistance to being taught. The challenge is daunting and seems to cause Annie some degree of hopelessness/desperation/increased motivation etc.
Relational Conflict/ Situational Conflict – Annie disagrees with Kate and Keller's methods of bringing up their child on principal as well as because it is preventing her from doing her job well.	"I think everybody else here does." "I don't think Helen's worst handicap is deafness or blindness. I think it's your love. And pity." "No wonder she won't let me come near her."	Although Kate thinks that it is Annie who underestimates Helen in this extract, it is actually the couple who discount (disregard) Helen's ability to learn and be disciplined. Annie evidently thinks that Helen's bad behaviour and stubborn resistance to being taught is a result of her parent's love and pity.

(b) In your opinion, is Annie successful in overcoming the challenges she faces in the Keller household with respect to educating Helen? Explain your answer with evidence from the extract.

This is an inferential-type question. Students are to simply state their evaluation of the situation based on inferences made. They are required to 1) infer the challenges that Annie faces in trying to educate Helen and 2) observe what Annie has and has not been able to achieve with Helen i.e. what has Helen learned to do. Based on these two understandings, pupils are to respond with either a yes/ no answer, weighing the situation, whether Annie is successful despite the obstacles or unsuccessful because of the obstacles. Ambitious pupils might give "…to a certain extent" type of answer, which will require substantiation of both sides of the issue.

However, had Annie not come, Helen's education might not have been possible as Helen might have been sent to the madhouse. If NO: Annie does not seem to overcome the challenges. All she manages to do is teach Helen how to fold her napkin, something which, given Helen's intelligence, is not entirely to Annie's credit. In addition, she further worsens the situation such that Helen fears her, runs from her to other people in the household, and won't even let her come close.

1. (c) "I don't think Helen's worst handicap is deafness or blindness." [line 27] Do you agree with this statement? Explain and support your answer with evidence from the extract and another occasion in the play.

Students may answer Yes or No to this question, as long as they are able to make a clear and substantiated stand. Usually, for Yes answers, pupils will see handicap as secondary problem that can be overcome. For No answers, pupils will tend to see the physical handicap as the cause of all her problems. Ambitious pupils might give "…to a certain extent" type of answer, which will require substantiation of both sides of the issue. It is also important that secondary reference to the text supports the claims made in the student's response, and that the answer should be phrased as identifying an occasion and not simply a quote from the text.

Strong answers will provide good cohesive arguments that include not just quotations but insightful analysis from close reading of passage as well as personal response and awareness of issues.

Secondary reference to text to support above claim made:	James and Captain Keller discuss putting Helen away with Kate. James wants to put her in "[s]ome asylum" while Keller just wants "a way of confining her". In the same discussion, James highlights Annie's views about how handicapping Helen's parents love is to her. "Never learn with everyone letting her do anything she takes it into her mind to –" contrasts with Keller's opinion: "Deprived child, the least she can have are the little things she wants." (p14) Kate argues: "How can you discipline an afflicted child? Is it her fault?" (p15) Breakfast scene, Annie flares up: "The whole house turns on her whims, is there anything she wants she doesn't get? I'll tell you what I pity, that the sun won't rise and set for her all her life, and every day you're telling her it will, what good will your pity do her when you're under the strawberries, Captain Keller?"(p55) During Annie's negotiation for more time with Keller, Annie considers Helen's potential. "Cleanliness is next to nothing, she has to learn that everything has its name! That words can be her eyes, to everything in the world outside her, and inside too, what is she without words? With them she can think, hagve ideas, be reached, there's not a thought or fact in the world that can't be hers."(p99)

Secondary reference to text to support above claim made:	The incident where Helen yanks buttons off Aunt Ev's dress, Aunt Ev makes the observation that "This child has more sense than all these men Kellers, if there's ever any way to reach that mind of hers."(p14) As Anagnos points out when briefing Annie, Helen is "Deaf, blind, mute – who knows? She is like a little safe, locked, that no one can open. Perhaps there is a treasure inside." (p18)

"where children learn to be saucy": Anagnos is indirectly saying that Annie is rather saucy and cheeky herself.

"that battle": referring to Annie's time at the almshouse/Jimmie's death

"a resurrection": A reference to dead people coming back to life, and Annie is of course referring to Jimmie

"He keeps digging up": It is Annie herself, and her own unresolved thoughts and feelings for Jimmie that causes the flashbacks, not God

"I know what I'm like": Annie is sure of herself, and has a good grasp on her self-identity. Also knows her own stubborness, rebellious nature.

"she is much given to tantrums": hint of what's to come later in the play; idea of the type of conflicts that will arise once Annie starts teaching H

"means something is inside": foreshadows the fact that H might recover, as she does have the natural ability to learn just like anybody else.

"Well, so am I...warn them": hint of conflicts that will arise. Annie is also as stubborn and as strong-willed, to such a great extent that she thinks the Kellers deserve to be warned of her, even though she says so in a rathe playful tone of voice.

"The only time I have trouble is when I'm right.": In that case, other people must feel that she is wrong at most times. This again shows us the extent of Annie's rebellious and strong-willed nature.

"Annie, be -- humble": Obviously something Annie is not, since she needs to be reminded to be so.

"I hope I won't need their pity.": A major issue with Annie, is introduced here. From this we know that Annie cannot tolerate this idea of pity but when she goes to the Kellers' it seems like she's bombarded with nothing but that particular emotion, and this becomes another source of conflict.

"like a drowned rat": Annie used to be in a very wretched situation

"thought I died when Jimmie died": Brother's death has had a profound impact on her life

"I haven't loved a soul since and I never will": Annie is rejecting the idea of any more deep emotion, like the one she had for her brother. She is frightened of being hurt again, by losing someone she loves. What she will grow to realise is that everyone needs to love, and be loved in return.

"all the fights and the trouble": Again an allusion to Annie's difficult and strong-willed character.

"don't want to say goodbye...I'm crying.": She does have a strong attachment to the place which brought her up, and is capable of feeling gratitude and strong emotion. She is loyal and a good person deep inside, despite all the "trouble" she may have caused.
